Science Education in Emergency Medicine

This introductory course to scientific research is a collaboration between SWESEM (Svensk Föreningen för Akutsjukvård), DBRM Research School and the doctoral course program in Cell biology and genetics at KI. The course takes place in October 22-26, 2012 at Karolinska Institutet Solna. The main target group is residents (ST-läkare) with little or no previous clinical research experience.

After the completed course, the students will be able to design a small scale project and write the corresponding research plan. The students will be able to give short oral presentations of a research project and write a research report following the principles of scientific communication. The students will be able to make systematic literature searches and critically appraise scientific articles. The students will be able to demonstrate the ability to link clinical research to basic science and vice versa.

The course consists of theoretical and practically oriented themes. The major topics covered include: design of research projects, research methods, information competency, science communication, research ethics, research funding and practical research economy, laws, rules and regulations, good research practice. Practical steps in initiating and conducting research activities in a clinical setting (clinical research ladder). Recruiting a team and supervision of students.

The course is structured around the clinical research ladder, that visualizes the research process from the idea phase to scientific reporting. The research themes on the course relate to different themes of emergency medicine, basic science perspectives such as stem cell biology in stroke research and corresponding translational aspects. The course director in the October 2012 course is Lisa Kurland, and the course co-directors are Maaret Castrén and Diane Rimple.

All participants must bring their own laptop, since the course includes work with poster presentations (using PowerPoint) plus writing ethics applications.
