Stem Cell Biology and Bioinformatics Tools

The course covers key bioinformatic tools that can be used in the quest to find answers to questions such as Why does a stem cell differentiate into one cell type and not another?

After the completed course, the students should be able to explain the use of different bioinformatic tools in stem cell research, and use these different bioinformatic tools to analyse micro-array data from stem cell datasets, and to merge results into known cellular pathways. After the course, the students should demonstrate a critical scientific way of thinking and be critical in the integration of stem cell research with bioinformatics.

The course consists of cathedral lectures, hands-on computer exercises, problem-based group discussions and an individual examination in the form of a short multi-choice quiz.

The course is organized by the research school of DBRM (Developmental Biology For Regenerative Medicine, www.dbrm.se) in collaboration with Dr. Alistair Chalk at Griffith University in Australia. DBRM and the DBRM Research School are funded by the Swedish Research Council (Vetenskapsrådet, www.vr.se).
