"Observational skills, pattern recognition, critical reasoning and contextual learning at the art museum". A pre-conference workshop in connection with AMEE in Lyon, France, on August 25, 2012. Visual arts and medicine have much in common. The artist, viewer and scientist/ physician critically observe situations to create a product, whether it is a work of art, interpretation or differential diagnosis. Developing the ability to filter information and reason deductively facilitates the transfer of knowledge among contexts and the identification of patterns from the information overload. The workshop intends to help the participants see beneath the surface by combining their emotional, reflective and analytical capabilities. Organisers Cristian Stefan (Medical College of Georgia, USA); Neil M Borden Medical College of Georgia, USA); James A Welu (Worcester Art Museum, USA); Matti Nikkola (Karolinska Institute, Sweden).
