Our research program builds on the concept that cells continuously integrate signals from their microenvironment with cell intrinsic genetic and epigenetic programs to regulate cellular functions. Microenvironmental cues include chemical signals originating from the extracellular matrix, from growth factors or through cell-cell communication. In addition, the physical nature of the microenvironment provides geometrical, mechanical and topographical signals that have a critical impact on cellular function. Our research efforts have been directed mainly at understanding the spatial and mechanical aspects of cell-cell communication through Notch and Eph/ephrin signaling pathways and of signaling by heparin-binding growth factors. We address these questions by resorting to a broad tool kit that includes the development of novel micro- and nanotechnologies. In addition, we explore the applications of environmental control of stem cell function in regenerative medicine and cancer.
