The overall goal of the research or
my laboratory is to shed light on the general principles of the coordination
of membrane budding events in nerve cells. This occurs during uptake
(endocytosis) and degradation of receptors, synaptic vesicle recycling,
during cell growth and development, and mitochondrial division. A number
of viruses and bacteria utilize endocytosis to enter neurons. Malfunctions
in these mechanisms lead to neurodegenerative diseases. We try to understand
how the effector proteins, involved in membrane deformation and budding,
become recruited to the membrane and how the action these proteins is
coordinated. Our current focus is on scaffolding molecules, which coordinate
effectors at the neuronal membrane.
